Smith & Wesson 22A Pistol Field Stripping & Cleaning

Step by step instructions for field stripping and cleaning the Smith & Wesson 22A, 22LR, 5.5" Barrel Pistol. It's pretty easy and fast to do after you do it a few times. I tried to take pictures of each step to show how it's done.

Field Stripping Procedure

Smith & Wesson 22A Pistol Pull the slide and lock it back.

Remove the magazine.
Push in the take down button. It's hard to do by hand so I use the edge of a table and push from the gun handle.

With the button depressed, carefully lift the barrel up and out.
Separate the barrel from the receiver.
Remove the barrel from the receiver.

Move up, out and a little backwards.
Slide Removal

Grab the slide tightly with your left hand (be careful because it's under spring tension). Depress the slide stop with your right hand. Allow the slide to slowly move forward until it stops.
Remove the slide assembly from the receiver.
The recoil spring spring assembly (spring, rod and plastic fitting will come off with the slide).
Slide Recoil spring assembly.
Remove the recoil spring assembly.

Subject: Smith & Wesson 22a Recoil Spacer Detail No. 33

I have lost the retainer that fits on the end of the recoil spring assembly. I need to know where I can order the retainer pieces or a complete recoil spring assembly. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. My pistol is a Smith and Wesson 22A , 22LR.
Thanks very much,
George

Smith & Wesson recoil spacer parts detail No. 33

Response - George,

You might want to check your gun box (behind the foam) for spare recoil spacers. Mine came with two spares (see picture).

The "retainer" is actually called a recoil spacer (spare parts detail No. 33). If you don't have any I would suggest you call or email Smith & Wesson Customer Service about the part. Their contact info is as follows:

Tel 800-3310852 or 413-781-8300 ext 2905
E-mail: qa@smith-wesson.com

Note - If you notice in the photograph the envelope refers you to page 20 of the Safety Instruction Manual. Don't bother looking at page 20. It should have said "Figure 20" which just warns you that the spacer must be attached to the end of the recoil rod before assembly.

Best regards,

Tanner
