Smith & Wesson 357 Magnum Model 60-15 Revolver Review

This is the first gun that I have ever owned. I chose it after doing a lot of research on handguns and which is the best one to get. I wanted on that would be simple to use, had a great brand name behind it, had a proven history, last a long time and one that was reliable. This one fit the bill.

I purchased the gun in Florida on June 17, 2008 for $544.99. I also purchased a gun cleaning kit as well as a box of 357 Magnum, a box of 38 Special +P and a box of 38 Special ammunition. I later purchased a holster for the gun. I then took it to the range to shoot it. Note - I later realized that this may not be a good first gun for new shooters, especially if you plan to shoot the more powerful 357 Magnum ammunition. The recoil may cause you to flinch and unlearning flinching may take years to overcome. First time shooters should probably start off with low powered 22LR guns and ammo to get use to shooting and the recoil that goes along with it.

Reasons For Buying a Smith & Wesson 357 Magnum Model 60-15 Revolver

  1. The gun is made by Smith & Wesson, a reputable and well respected gun manufacturer.

  2. The gun is made out of stainless steel. It's strong and should last a life time.

  3. The gun shoots a variety of ammunition (357 magnum, 38 special and 38 special plus P) each with varying degrees of wallop.

  4. It's a revolver, one of the simplest and most reliable of handgun types. Minimal training is required to shoot it. All you do is point and shoot.

  5. Revolvers rarely jam as compared to semi automatic pistols. If you pull the trigger and it doesn't fire, all you do is pull the trigger again and the next round is positioned and fired. Not so with a pistol.

  6. The gun is small enough for concealed carry.

  7. The gun is very accurate.

Reasons For Not Buying The Smith & Wesson 357 Magnum Model 60-15 Revolver

  1. It only holds 5 rounds of ammunition, as compared to comparable semi automatic pistols (such as a Glock 19) which commonly hold 15 rounds or more.

  2. If you shoot 38 special ammo through it the recoil is fine. If you plan to shoot 357 magnum through it you might want to try it first before you buy it to make sure the recoil isn't too much for you.

  3. The ammo that it shoots is not inexpensive, so if you plan to take it to the range each week and shoot it you might want to investigate cheaper 9mm alternatives.

Field Stripping And Cleaning

There is no fieldstripping to do with this gun. Nothing to remove or take apart like with semi automatic pistols. To clean it all you do is wipe it down, open the cylinder and clean and lubricate as you would any gun. Since there are only five cylinders it doesn't take that long.

Recommendation

The Smith & Wesson 357 Magnum Model 60-15 Revolver is a great gun. It's easy to use and it's dependable. If you want a gun to have at home to protect yourself this will do fine, but if you think that you will need more than five rounds of ammuniiton, look for something else.
