MOSSBERG 88 SHOTGUN SAFETY CHECK

Safety Button Action Lock Lever

  1. Position the safety button in the “ON” (SAFE) position. (Push in from left side. No red showing. Red = fire). Safety button shown in following picture is just in front of trigger.

  2. Visually and physically check chamber, elevator and magazine to be certain the shotgun is unloaded.

  3. Depress the action lock lever (small protruding lever sticking out the bottom near the trigger) and open the action by sliding the forearm (ribbed pumping part) fully rearward.

  4. Move the forearm slowly forward from the fully rearward position until the front of the bolt is in the middle of the ejection (silver looking metallic cylinder in ejection opening).

MOSSBERG 88 SHOTGUN BARREL REMOVAL

Take Down Screw Pull Out The Barrel

  1. Loosen the take down screw (magazine cap screw) by turning counterclockwise until the screw threads are completely disengaged from the end of the magazine.

  2. Remove (pull) the barrel from the receiver with a gentle back-and-forth rotational movement and while pulling the barrel out.

MOSSBERG 88 SHOTGUN TRIGGER HOUSING REMOVAL

Trigger Housing Retainer Pin Trigger Houding Assembly

  1. Position the shotgun on a clean surface with the trigger guard upward. With a blunt object (no greater than 3/16" [4.76 mm] diameter), push out the small diameter trigger housing retainer pin located on the side of the receiver, approximately a 1/2" (12.7 mm) below the rear of the trigger guard.

  2. Remove the trigger housing assembly by lifting the rear portion upward first. Do not pull the trigger and allow the hammer to fall when the trigger housing assembly is removed from the receiver. To do so may result in personal injury or damage to the assembly.

  3. CAUTION: Before performing any further disassembly, take time to study how the internal components are arranged inside the receiver.

INTERNAL RECEIVER COMPONENTS REMOVAL

CAUTION: Pay special attention to the position of the bolt, bolt slide and action slide bar assembly during this portion of the disassembly, as the parts must be in the same relationship during reassembly.

REMOVE THE CARTRIDGE INTERUPTOR AND CARTRIDGE STOP

Cartridge Interrupter

Located on left side of opening with gun upside down

Cartridge Stop

Located on right side of opening with gun upside down

  1. Remove the cartridge interrupter from the ejection port side and cartridge stop from the opposite side. (It may be necessary to tap the sides of the receiver lightly to release these parts. (Just reach in and pry or pull them out. They will usually just fall out when the gun is turned side wards or right side up and tapped on the side. There is nothing holding them in place except the trigger housing (I think).

REMOVE THE BOLT SLIDE

Bolt Slide

  1. Move the forearm/action slide assembly rearward so that the bolt assembly and bolt slide are three quarters of the way rearward. When the bottom of the bolt slide is aligned with the clearance cuts in the sides of the receiver, lift the bolt slide upward and out.

REMOVE THE BOLT ASSEMBLY

Slide Bolt Assembly Forward Remove Bolt Assembly

  1. Remove the bolt assembly by sliding it forward and out through the barrel opening at the front of the receiver.

REMOVE THE ELEVATOR

Pivot Elevator Up & Squeeze Remove The Elevator

  1. Pivot the front portion of the elevator upward out.

  2. Squeeze the two arms, which form the open end of the elevator assembly together sufficiently to disengage and remove the elevator.

REMOVE THE FOREARM/ACTION SLIDE ASSEMBLY

Pull Forearm Forward Off The Barrel

  1. Remove the forearm/action slide assembly by sliding it forward and off the magazine tube.

Shotgun field disassembly is now complete!

SHOTGUN CLEANING AND LUBRICATION

Normal use requires only that the mechanisms be free of excessive shooting residue. Very little lubrication other than a light oiling of external surfaces to prevent rust is needed. Scrub bore and chamber with solvent and follow with cleaning patches until barrel is clean. A final pass with a lightly oiled patch will provide a protective coating.

Clean and remove any deposits in the barrel extension. All metal parts should be cleaned with gun solvent and lightly lubricated with gun oil. Over lubrication should be avoided.

BOLT AND TRIGGER HOUSING ASSEMBLIES. The bolt and trigger housing assemblies are complex assemblies and should not be disassembled except by a factory authorized ProductServiceCenter, or qualified gunsmith. Clean as complete assemblies with gun solvent and lightly lubricate with gun oil.

MOSSBERG 88 SHOTGUN - ASSEMBLY OF SHOTGUN INTERNAL RECEIVER COMPONENTS

INSTALL THE FOREARM ASSEMBLY

Position The Forearm Assy Slide On

  1. Place the receiver with the trigger housing opening upward on a clean surface.

  2. Slide the forearm assembly onto the magazine tube while guiding the action slide bars into the corresponding cuts in the front of the receiver.

  3. Install the Forearm Assembly

INSTALL THE ELEVATOR

Squeeze Elevator & Install Position Elevator

  1. Assemble the elevator by squeezing the arms together sufficiently to position them in the receiver so that the buttons on the elevator fit into the corresponding (1/4" [6.4 mm]) diameter holes in the receiver.

  2. Pivot the elevator so that the forward portion of the elevator is even with the outside edge of the cavity in the receiver.

INSTALL THE BOLT ASSEMBLY

Insert the rear of the bolt assembly The ejector must fit into the corresponding slot in the bolt.

  1. Insert the rear of the bolt assembly, with its bolt lock downwards toward the front inside top of the receiver, into the barrel opening.

  2. Depress the ejector (located in the side of the receiver opposite the ejection port) to allow the bolt assembly to slide fully rearward.

  3. Push the elevator down until it rests against the bolt. Position the rear of the bolt assembly even with the rear of the clearance cuts in the sides of the receiver.

INSTALL THE BOLT SLIDE

Bolt Slide

  1. Position action bars so the notch on the bar is even with the cuts on the inside receiver wall.

  2. The bolt slide should be positioned with the slotted side facing up, with notch to the rear.

  3. Assemble the bolt slide, lowering the front of the bolt slide first, the bolt slide protrusion fits into the corresponding cut on the bottom of the bolt lock and action bar slots.

  4. Hold the bolt slide down and pull the forearm assembly forward. The bolt and bolt slide should move freely in their cuts in the receiver. If parts do not slide easily – DO NOT FORCE – disassemble and reassemble, paying attention to the relationship of the bolt, bolt slide and action slide bars.

INSTALL THE CARTRIDGE INTERUPTER AND CARTRIDGE STOP

INSTALL THE CARTRIDGE STOP

Install Cartridge Stop On Right Side

  1. Position the cartridge stop in its proper place on the inside right wall of the receiver. Position the cartridge stop along the inside of the right side. It will fit nicely in the machined inset groove. It just rests there and will fall out if the receiver is shaken. The curved hook end faces inward away from the receiver wall.

INSTALL THE CARTRIDGE INTERRUPTER

Install on left side Cartridge Interrupter Installation

  1. Position the cartridge interrupter in its proper places on the inside left wall of the receiver. Position the cartridge interrupter along the inside of the left side. The pin fits into the corresponding hole in the receiver wall. It will fit nicely in the machined inset groove. It just rests there and will fall out if shaken. The curved hook end faces inward away from the receiver wall.

  2. Use care not to shake or move it as both the cartridge stop and cartridge interrupter will dislodge or fall out easily. They are secured during the next step of the trigger housing installation.

SHOTGUN TRIGGER HOUSING ASSEMBLY INSTALLATION

INSTALL THE TRIGGER HOUSING

NOTE: Hammer must be in the fully-cocked position to allow the trigger housing to be inserted.

Install the trigger housing, front end first at an angle

  1. Hold the cartridge stop and cartridge interrupter in place firmly against the inner walls with one hand and grasp the trigger housing assembly with the other.

  2. Insert the lugs, on each side of the front corner of the trigger housing into the slots on each side of the receiver, then ease the rear of the housing assembly down and into position. DO NOT FORCE! NOTE: If the trigger housing does not fit into place easily, check that all internal trigger housing pins are flush with the side of the housing and that the cartridge interrupter and cartridge stop are positioned properly.

  3. Align the trigger pin hole in the housing assembly with those in the receiver. Insert the trigger housing pin and push in fully until flush with the side of the.

Shotgun assembly is now complete!

MOSSBERG 88 SHOTGUN FUNCTION TESTING

  1. Move the safety button fully rearward to the “ON” (SAFE) position and keep muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
